Dermatology is a field of medicine that examines and treats diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes.

Dermatologist

Dermatologist is a licensed physician who has undergone specialist dermatology training. The dermatologist’s specialist training in Finland is long (6 years) and comprehensive. It can be completed in the universities of Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Oulu and Kuopio. Training includes general dermatology, skin surgery and skin cancer (dermatological oncology), allergic diseases (allergology) and sexually transmitted diseases (venereology). Dermatologists investigate and treat skin diseases of patients of all ages from babies to the elderly.

General dermatology

Dermatologist is a specialist in the field and plays a key role in the treatment of dermatology, in the education and consultation of dermatology, and in skin disease research.

Skin cancer (dermatosurgery and dermatological oncology)

Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of skin cancers and other malignant skin changes are part of the core of the dermatologist’s specialist. Examples of this are skin dermatoscope examination and surgical (operative removal) and non-operative treatments (liquid nitrogen cryo surgery, photodynamic therapy, local treatments) of malignant skin changes.

Allergic skin diseases (allergology)

Allergic diseases of the skin and mucous membranes (including contact allergy), as well as the practical implementation and evaluation of the necessary allergy tests are important in the field of dermatology. Dermatologist plays a key role in the study of delayed contact allergy (epicutaneous tests) and in the treatment of work-related hand eczemas (occupational diseases).

Sexual diseases (venerology)

Examining, treating and preventing sexually transmitted diseases are part of the dermatologist’s work. In addition, the dermatologist will also investigate and treat other genital area and mucosal diseases or skin diseases that occur on the skin and mucous membranes.

Cosmetic dermatology

Dermatologist’s treatments for cosmetic dermatology include skin laser treatments, skin peeling, injection treatments (for example botulinum toxin and filler injections) and other treatments.
